Made in China, Stay in China

Got milk? If you do, pray that it’s not from China. The Olympics are over, and its back to business in China’s manufacturing industry with the latest toxic milk scandal, which has killed four infants and poisoned around 54,000 Chinese, mostly children under the age of two. Twenty-two different dairy producers in China, Sanlu Group Co. being the biggest of them were found to have sold melamine laced dairy products to consumers. In Taiwan, 6.1 metric tons of imported poisonous milk powder has been removed from shelves, while in China over 7,000 metric tons of dairy products have been pulled from stores. What’s more disturbing is that the Sanlu Group was apparently receiving customer complaints about their dairy products as early as December of 2007. This has once again brought China’s food safety and quality control into serious question causing countries around the world to ban imports of Chinese milk products.

Melamine is a white powder that is used in industrial plastics-making. It is typically used in the manufacturing of floor tiles, formica, kitchenware, fertilizers and for the tanning of leathers. Due to the fact that melamine is nitrogen rich, when added to watered-down or below-standard milk, protein levels appear higher in standard quality tests. The problem is that melamine causes kidney stones and can even lead to kidney failure. Melamine was added because shrinking profit margins took precedence over public health, safety and worse yet, human life.

The Chinese government has responded in recent days with their typical song and dance. A few arrests have been made, and officials have been forced to resign in order to shift attention away from the government. The state controlled media (propaganda machine) has placed all the blame on the Sanlu Group Co. However, it’s interesting to note that Sanlu and many other leading companies involved in the scandal had been given inspection-free status by the government’s food safety watchdog. Chinese officials have tried to reassure a highly skeptical world that the problem is now under control. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, while speaking at the UN in New York, said the Chinese would use the crisis as a chance to overhaul safety controls. China will “take seriously supervision and inspections in every link of production, truly ensuring the interests of consumers,” Wen said.

The problem is it’s hard to take China seriously when you have a manufacturing track record as abysmal, fatal, as theirs. Just last year the world witnessed massive recalls with toothpaste laced with toxic diethylene glycol, contaminated seafood, faulty tires, lead-painted toys, and deadly pet food laced with none other than, melamine. When you add the latest toxic milk scandal to the list, it’s obvious that the interests and health of the consumers have never been of any concern to the Chinese.

So what has been the reaction from the KMT government in Taiwan? It can be described as slow, laughable, and worst of all, deadly for Taiwanese citizens. The KMT’s Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday night, in a move that defies all sense and reason, actually loosened the food safety standard for melamine from 0 parts per million (ppm) to 2.5 ppm, meaning that imported Chinese food products to Taiwan can contain up to 2.5 ppm of deadly melamine. Even in China, pig feed must have below 2.0 ppm of melamine. Before we go any further, it must be repeated that melamine is an industrial strength fertilizer and plastics-making chemical. It is not fit whatsoever for human consumption. How can the KMT have the audacity to think that any sane person would voluntarily choose to ingest something that is used for plastics-making? Ma Ying Jeou and the KMT have completely lost their minds if they think Taiwanese people will stand for poison in their food. If the KMT want melamine in their food, they should ask China to ship the 7,000 metric tons of removed toxic dairy products to Taiwan so they can consume all of it.

The DOH will also send a delegation of experts from Taiwan to China in hopes to better understand the recent scandal. But honestly, what more is there to understand? The Chinese were putting poison in their milk and knowingly selling it to consumers. Premier Liu Chao-shiuan said on Tuesday one of the reasons for sending a delegation to China was to, “set up a better system of food safety inspection modeled on the US Food and Drug Administration.” Can someone please tell me why then, if Taiwan wants to model the US Food and Drug Administration, we are sending experts to China to examine Chinese food safety controls? The world has seen time and again that China obviously has no idea what it’s doing when it comes to quality control. The KMT needs to spend more time developing stricter and more effective quality controls here in Taiwan than it does worrying about what’s happening in China.

The best idea, sorry worst, from president, sorry mister, Ma Ying Jeou has to be his idea to setup a hotline with Beijing to ensure food safety and public health in Taiwan. Here’s the simplest way to ensure public health in Taiwan, don’t buy from China. Why does Taiwan need a hotline to Beijing just for food safety? Does Mr. Ma plan to have more contaminated food sent to Taiwan in the future? Or does he actually think that the next time China has another manufacturing scandal, and they will have another one, that someone in China is going to call first on the hotline and give him the heads up? Ma and the KMT have consistently shown their incompetence, disregard for Taiwan, and love for China ever since Ma took office. The Taiwanese people can no longer idly sit by while the KMT ruins this country. Taiwan’s future will be one that is made in Taiwan, not China.

The first casuality in Ma's administration is Lin Fang-yu, who just resigned as Minister of Health. He may have been the head of NTU Hospital, but he has no public health background whatsoever. I knew that we were in trouble when he said that people could only pray in response to the enterovirus outbreak during the summer.

I totally agree with you! It has made me so mad to see how the KMT has been dealing with this whole melamine situation. While all the other countries immediately banned milk products from China, Ma took the "wait-and-see" approach just because he doesn't want to point fingers at China! If he had a little child of his own drinking these products, would he be so irresponsible?! To him, the lives of Taiwanese people mean nothing! It's all about keeping up appearances--sending some stupid delegation to China when he should be concentrating efforts in Taiwan! He's such a disgrace!!!

Still stuck in the historical event, such as 228? why not look forward to the present A-bian scandal and how to help Taiwan's future by taking other practical actions instead of doing some useless actions in front of the TV and dose such kind of protest action really help Taiwan? Or it simply revealed your idealistic and brainwashed thoughts by the DPP? Does Taiwan really have to be independent from China? That is not up to you, and if you really love Taiwan, you might consider to give your American citizenship and focus on other more helping ways instead of joining the 1025 meaningless parade, Think about why President Ma had such a hard time, IT IS BECAUSE DPP RUINED TAIWAN'S ECONOMY FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS!

To Clown, you are really a clown, you should really just put your energy on entertaining the kids, instead of making bias statement. You said that "IT IS BECAUSE DPP RUINED TAIWAN'S ECONOMY FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS!" This statement is totally false. DPP did not make this happen, the greedy banker did. Not DPP, the global financial crisis will still occur even if KMT is in the off during the past 8 year. I wonder how much money will get stolen by them if they are in the office for the last 8 years.

To Eric:

Good writing, I am glade that you speak out.

TO Sleeplessboy: You really needed to get some sleep, it will help you to be more open-minded. I quote your statements:
"This statement is totally false. DPP did not make this happen, the greedy banker did. Not DPP, the global financial crisis will still occur even if KMT is in the off during the past 8 year." How can you say that when the DPP is the administrative party during the past 8 years? Aren't you just slapping your own mouth? BTW, all those crisis starts from a LOUSY government and GREEDY LEADER, the bankers were just his accompanies. Scandals won't occur simply because greedy bankers, it often involve government authorities. Now, just wait and see what will happen to the known "The son of Taiwan" and the Man who
"proclaimed that he loved Taiwan by transferring enormous amounts of money to his offshore accounts" He still have to face the court and justice. Well, He still insists on what he's done is all for Taiwan, then maybe he should make up a better lie.

Hi Eric:
I graduated from Tsing Hua University 2 years ago. I love Taiwan so much as you do so that I took part in a national exam right after I graduated from college and wish that I could really do sth for my beloved country in the future as a government official. But after Mr. Ma was elected as our president, what he has done gradually ruined my dream for Taiwan. I am so sad about all his policy towards China, but I found no ways to express my anger. Until today, I saw your brave deeds in the news, I felt so touched that someone loves Taiwan so much as me. I am so thankful that you spoke out for Taiwanese people!!!
I really wish that there can be more and more young people like you cuz this country needs young people to fight for this beautiful island.
I am a local resident in Kaohsing, I am so proud that you expressed most of the southern people's feelings.
Thank you, I really appreciate your brave deed!!!

agree with shohei hamano. but sorry, call me heartless, i cant tolerate non-congenital/voluntary brain deficiency.

fallacies abound in your argument, clown. let me tell you what, dude. you have allowed yourself getting brainwashed by chinese-owned media and proudly boasted about it. that’s not very wise.

if 1025(exercising citizen's political rights) is meaningless, then no country around the world should hold elections, becos they are meaningless, by your standard. as your nonsensical argument goes, referendums; people's voice; freedom of expression and all other characteristics of democracy- you name it- are thus meaningless. and ah-oh, your comment becomes meaningless. oops, did you just slap yourself, sadist?

yes, we need to be forward-looking. and with history as the guide. we have been pushed around by all sorts of people for too long - subordinated, sidelined bullied...(check your thesaurus for the endless list) - we must stand up and be our own masters NOW. to protect taiwanese from all these bullying, we need a country and a government that is for the TW people and by the TW people. this IS forward-looking. if you dont wish to be a taiwanese, then pack up and crawl your way to China and lick their boots. Chinese ministry of propaganda would enjoy admiring their pieces of work. and most probably, given their “kind” nature, welcome you with all hospitability and with their tainted milk and fried sliced human kidneys(if you are health-conscious, ask for boiled ones instead) oh wait, are you a taiwanese in the first place?

practical? if Ma and KMT has so much energy, trying all they can(while spending taxpayers' money for investigation, creating political turmoil which in turn hurts economy....etc) to stigmatise an ex-president, why dont they focus on saving the economy from the current dire straits. dont tell me "BECAUSE DPP RUINED TAIWAN'S ECONOMY FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS!"(which is a historical event: smth you deem insignificant i thought?) what dont you try this sentence: BECAUSE. because KMT has RUINED everything, EVERYTHING in taiwan for the PAST 60 YEARS! And don’t tell me that KMT cant solve it because it’s a global problem. Fuck. Taiwan’s trade deficits and budget deficits are rocketing, unemployment are shooting up, stock market nosediving, Foreign Investment are flowing out like toilet’s flushing! Tell me, which Asian country( excluded Japan, which belongs to the Western economic bloc ) is performing as bad?

gosh. stop slapping yourself here and wake up now!

As an oversea Taiwanese American, I have never thought myself to be in the position to stand up and walk toward the front to protest against Chinese communism. The reason being that I no longer lived in Taiwan and if no one in Taiwan is willing to stand up for the country and it's people, why should I? As I watched Eric on TV tonight, it gives me great pleasure and realization that the next generation of Taiwanese will not be complacent and simply just hand Taiwan to China. Frankly, why should Taiwan be a part of China? Why can't Taiwan be an independent nation and be a part of the world community. The shear opposition of the Chinese government in accepting Taiwan into the UN is a testiment of the communistic thinking and intolerance that are exhibited by the mainland Chinese community, whether it is in the United States, or perhaps in China, as I cannot comment since I never been there and do not wish to be there. I have to say that in fairness, not all mainland Chinese are communists nor do they all hold fundamental views that Taiwan need to reunify with China, but the majority do support such referendum and my question is WHY?! Today, as I watched Eric's thirty seconds worth of fame, I truly believe there's some hope that Taiwan may one day become independent as most of us hope it will. If everyone feels the same way, we need to unify ourselves and make our voices heard as Eric has done. I believe it's hardest to start a movement, but once the movement has started, it's much easier to build on the momentum.

Personally, I think those who wants to reunify with China should just pack up their bags and get the hell out of Taiwan and move back to China. If you don't like Taiwan, get the fuck out. If you love China, get a one-way ticket and go home. Simple really...

You don't represent me, nor do you represent the majority of the Taiwanese people. What you and your friends did in the Confucius temple were an embarrassment to the people of Taiwan, who are known for kindness and hospitality, not violence or extremism.

These petty acts are not acts of love toward Taiwan -- instead, people like you are no different from Hamas or the Tablian -- their love for their country only wrecks their country.

If you truly love Taiwan, as you claimed, I'd suggest you to behave like a rational person, instead of allowing the same old pan-green propaganda get to you. Knowing how to separate political b.s. from reality is the first step toward maturity, which is something that you (and the pan-green camp altogether) need right now.

to Eric,
Great job man. I also studied in NCKU and am proud of what you did..keep up the good work.

to Hcc:
Did you ever consider that if you were 'Chinese' in China this news would never had made it on TV.

to Clown:
I quote "sit down and think about what they are actually supporting", I think what Eric wanted to express although not in the way everyone agrees is best, is that Taiwan is a country of its own, we are stuck in this situation where we cannot be treated as equals when we speak up internationally or when we travel, people think you are from CHINA. If you travel at all you would know that most countries cannot distinguish the difference, which is why i believe adding the words Taiwan on the passport is very practical and yes it must have some Political propaganda BS behind, but for citizens its just the practicality that it serves.

Secondly: I quote "how can you guys hate CHINA so much?" i think we can never be forgiving enough to a country that always claims Taiwan is theirs when all they do is cut us down in any scenes around the world. How can YOU LOVE them so much is the question... And i do agree you can and are always welcome to defect to China if that is your wish.

This is my first time to visit blogs or sites of the kind. Quite a feeling to me honestly. You guys are all young Taiwanese, and appeared loving this country very much. That is good! And most of you act or talk like many Taiwanese often says-"爽就好“. So you all admire what Eric just did. You believe that is good for... for what?

Firstly, have you thought about why we should become another country (well, we are, so I mean a country with different name?). When we become a real independent country (with different name, again), what the good will be (爽就好?)? Or should we be part of China (comma, are you idiot)? Or should we be part of USA (if it is possible)? Or part of Japan? Or... After all of these "OR", please come back and think again - Why should we be independent with another new name? If you have no answer for this question, I suggest you open your eyes and think harder!

You are good! Because you are all pure and idealistic (assume the ones behind these names are real)! But with what you all said here, I don't see any clue why Taiwan can win in this battle (with 1025?). Or why should we win? You will never win before you see thru the situation...

At 3:52 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sigh, will you stay in Taiwan with us all if someday Mainland China use nuclear weapon to Taiwan? If you want to be a hero, try to be everyone's, not only yourself.

Eric, I am proud of you, too.

Hey mate, its good to hear that a youth Taiwanese still willing to stand out to express his thought about Taiwan's identity. But I think it is enough of the street riot way for now and do something more progressive. I think both KMT and DDP are old and out of date, one lost its identity after finding that no one on the island want to "return" to china and another stuck in the "election game" looking harder to the empty name of Taiwanese independent rather than gaining support from international community. Taiwan has already stuck in this troubled shallow water for nearly ten years and no one's being able to stand out to make a difference.

If you really want to make a difference, try more effort to link all the clubs around Taiwanese universities make conference on researching all the policies they are doing and propose better ones if you guys can. Form a shadow parliament and kick all those cunts out of Taiwanese politic. Taiwan's enough of empty talks and we need someone with more wisdom to encounter all the international affairs not just say " f*ck you china" and can't do anything to it other than war. We need more strength to beat them and and someone with wisdom is what we need...

我只能對閣下這位ABT(America Born Taiwanese)表明一段非常現實的內容。

I am not a ABT, but came to the US when i was little and have spent most of life in the US. My parents told me about you've done in taiwan yesterday and this website of yours last night, and I must come here to show you some support, and if we were there, we would've joined you as well. Just so you know, I am, too, very tired of the chinese calling me "chinese, and you are one of us", it's totally BS...and YES, when I was younger, my parents, aunts and uncles, all have told me about the 228 massacre incident in Formosa, but they also told me that this topic was forbiden and couldn't be taught or even be spoken of in Taiwan...anyway, I had to learn and gather all the historical information via my own research in the US...sort of like you did, and the more facts I've learnt, the sadder I got...

I know there are gonna be some pro-china ppl coming onto your site and leave crazy, nonsense comments before they leave, but please don't ever get discouraged by their stupid, uneducated comments, just knowing you are doing this for a good cause and for the land we all love.

all in all, well done! and im sure most of the Taiwanese are very proud of you, if not all...and thanks very much for speaking up and standing up for Taiwan in front of the chinese MoFos.

Again, many thanks...
A proud Formosan fellow

One more thing, I have many friends who are ABTs as well, but they all have told me that they were somewhat dissed when they were in Taiwan...only because they weren't borned in Taiwan like the rest of the people who live there..

so here, I gotta say to all Taiwanese and to the people who visit your site..

ABTs love Taiwan just as much as you do, recognize Taiwan as much as you do…if not more…so don’t ever doubt their love for Taiwan!!!

"Little" Chang protested "Big" Chang = "Small" Taiwan fight "Huge" China. This is we call " Taiwan Spirit" I think your parents are so lucky to have brave and decent son and I do believe they are also very proud of you.

You said: "Fight for the Right" This is not only the hero can do but also every Taiwanese who identify this land.

For years experience I realized there is no chance to make money in China so as our business. The nation, the leaders and the Chinese are staring at your doing, when you have the profit, they come to you for the tax or bullying you for self benefit.

Most of worthless politicos think "Huge China" is the country glittering with gold and always convince us must get closely with this great country, otherwise, boat of "little Taiwan" is going to sink in the near furture, but finally not a piece we can pick up!

Many famous economical scholars said China will replace America to be the most powerful country soon.
Do you think American will choose to be the part of China? If they no, Japan no, Singapore no...Why Taiwan yes???

I have three children and live in China right now, however I teach them never lose " Taiwan Spirit" and forget they are the very very special "Taiwanese".

Here I am mourning the death of Mr. Wang Yung-Ching who is one of " Taiwan Spirit".

I'd have to say that I agree with HCC and Clown. As an American-born Taiwanese, I feel that what Eric did could in fact be hurting Taiwan. Zhang came to Tainan to exchange solely on "educational grounds." He did not represent the Red China government in any way during this trip. Many of our mainland friends are friendly people. And many, if not most, desire and look up to the democracy and freedom in Taiwan. I felt that what Zhang said actually gave us a slap in the face. He simply said "it was a new experience" for him because of Taiwan's freedom and democracy. However, before we express our feelings and opinions, shouldn't we also pay the same respect that Zhang has done for us so far? He never initiated any fights, and he called for embracing different ideals.
As an American-born Taiwanese, I am grateful of the ROC government that protected the Taiwan island and some offshore islands from the Red China. I am truly grateful that we are ruled by the government of the ROC, and I do hope we live up to our ideals. Maybe one day, we can prove to the mainlanders that maybe there's another China (Republic of China/ROC) that they can love more (than their PR China)!

To longliveROC - The Gov't of ROC had also murdered tens and thousands of people back in late 1940s, and still lying about what they did..and you don't sound like a ABT...you are a ABC - American Born Chinese, and there's a huge difference between ABT and ABC, and clearly, your comment has proven that you are a ABC.

To cf - you have been to the US for over a decade, and I am sure you have a "green card" or US citizenship as well, what makes you different? your comment is nothing but simply hypocritical, and by far, does serving the military really equal to true loyalty to your country? or just a process to brainwash your way of thinking? I think what Eric did was more than patriotic, and more than most of you would ever do in your life, and 勇氣? Eric definitely has it in my eyes, he's got the ball to confront the 中國人, do you really have the ball to do what he did? I don't think so...in which that makes you the coward - 懦夫 in my eye... and who the f are you calling Eric外國人? Your district governor Ma is a hong kong, china born foreigner, and by using your logic, it is sarcastic by having Ma as the president then? correct? so your logic makes no sense at all, but that doesn't matter, it only matters as he does not appreciate this place where he grew up at nor any love whatsoever for this land. Throughout the Taiwanese history, there were many 外國人 who loved Taiwan, even to-date, there are many 外國人 who love Taiwan, and perhaps more than most of the people in Taiwan. For your information, Dr. George Leslie Mackay (馬偕), a Canadian Med Doc who spent most of his life and died in Formosa and was buried in Formosa, and his tomb is still there today. And he's just one of the examples, there are many to list...who were japanese, american, dutch, etc., and they established hospitals, orphanages, etc. for the greater good of Taiwan..all in all, ASK YOURSELF! what have you done for this place that has made you a better person and a better 本國人? so you could judge "外國人" and their love for this land? You've done absolutely NOTHING for Taiwan! Moreover, it's proven that Ma had green card, his children are american citizens, and did he even serve in the military?! yeah-f*ing-right! so don't be ridiculous to judge people with your stupid logic, it only matters with their heart and love, not because of their military record or all that nonsense, and even though Eric doesn't have all that by your "qualification or standard" of 本國人, he's more than that, at least being a 勇敢的臺灣人, way beyond and more than your 假臺灣馬 by far.

Again, ABTs love Taiwan just as much as you do, recognize Taiwan as much as you do…if not more…so don’t ever doubt or judge their love for Taiwan!!!

Long Live Formosa!

However, Ma has apologized many times about what the KMT had done in the past, and have faced the problems without "hiding" or "lying" like before. I pay great respect for him. And my grandmother has forgiven the KMT, but clearly, she does not love the KMT. However, she believes it is in Taiwan's best interest to stay with the ROC, NOT declaring independence from the ROC, or China, in general.
She does not love the KMT, but she does have a clear mind. She knows that it is safe that Taiwan has been turned to the ROC, not the PRC. (Although she admits that she had rather have Taiwan stayed with Japan.)
What defines your so-called "ABT" and "ABC?"
I am not going to deny that I am an ABC, and I certainly do think myself as an ABT, also. The reason is, simply put, my parents are Taiwanese, my grandparents are Taiwanese. None of my family members came with the KMT because of the civil war. I am an ABC because I do not deny the Chinese blood in me (as an ethnic group), and I claim to be an ABT because I am, indeed, Taiwanese.
Some people like to "define" other people by their own "definitions." Namely, "if you don't love Taiwan the way I do, then sorry you're not Taiwanese."
I find that funny. I am as ABT as any other ABTs, some ABTs want Taiwan to be independent, some ABTs want Taiwan to be rested with, and protected by the ROC. Last time I checked, so are the residents in Taiwan. Some Taiwanese want Taiwan to be independent, some rather keep the status quo -- to be with ROC. (Mind you, for Ma to be elected with his political ideals, with the SMALL percentage of the so-called "Person-out-of-the-province" or Waishengren is not enough. Ma's political ideals MUST have been accepted by the so-called benshengren/person-of-the-province; and on a LARGE scale.)
I respect your opinion as an individual in Taiwan, and I am well aware many others think like you. However, I also call your attention to the decision, and the opinion, that the rest of the Taiwanese have decided for the next four years of Taiwan in March.
I will tell you, simply, I am not the one defining what an ABT is, I am simply stating who I am, with simple facts. I was born in the US, and my family members are all bensheng/person-of-the-province Taiwanese; and I believe that makes me an ABT, by facts, and by common definition (as oppose to a subjective one.)

I love Taiwan, and I respect the ROC government that has protected Taiwan from the Red China. I denounce the shameful murders and other actions that the KMT had performed in the past. I also, accept the apologies and attempts to reconcile the KMT have given. I look forward to the future as an ABT, or Taiwanese. I want what's best for Taiwan right now. I want security and safety for Taiwan. Because I know, the day ROC ceases to exist, the replacement country is not going to be called "Taiwan", it may very well be, the PRC.

Therefore, I am a firm believer of the ROC. I am an advocate for what's best in Taiwan. Not "what feels good" to do, and putting our country at risks.

Love Live the Republic of China.
Long Live democracy in Taiwan.

Sincerely,
LongliveROC

First off, much respect to you Eric for your courage and commitment to stand out for what you believe is right. It is safe to save that vast majority of the taiwanese concurred with your beliefs and it is just a matter of the extent of their agreement. What I witnessed the last two days is truly remarkable. From your bold action to the incident of vice chairman Chang yesterday, have further reinforce the true issue that exist in the great nation of Taiwan. It is the issue of identity. To be clear, it is the conflict between pro-independent and anti-independent. Indeed, this has taken place for decades, but it is evident that as time goes by, the issue only become more apparent and critical. It is no longer a matter of political issues. What is taken place here is far more complex and serious than what took place in the civil war in the United States. The racism issue in America is merely a one or two way perspective. Yet, what we are facing today are debates that may not have a right or wrong answer. In response to comments made by CLOWN and CJ earlier, peace, harmony, and booming economy opportunities aren't as easy as unifying with China. To maintain current status may be the best thing for both sides at presence. After all, even if in the entire nation of Taiwan is committed to independence, Taiwan may still never be able to do so. The reality is the rest of the world is on China's side for economical concerns and benefits. With less people, less land, less money, and less power, Taiwan is like a little child that has seldom power to defend itself. A child that demands for attention and dying to get respect from the elders and at the same time only want to be treated equally. Taiwan can never speak as loud as China. Taiwan can never threaten the way China do to us. Taiwan can only hope for a miracle. The DPP saying today that we have no reason nor obligation to treat our enemy with sincerity and respect. How can you blame them? If a guest comes to your home is someone that has repeatedly threaten to harm you if you go against their will, should you open your arms with welcoming invitation? Better question to ask is if someone openly denies you, restrict your actions and rights, WHY WOULD YOU EVEN INVITE THEM TO YOUR HOME IN THE FIRST PLACE? Clearly, thats just an example of our ignorant government mishandling the events. Our KMT government wants to make friend with our potential "enemy". The word enemy is questionable but certainly by their actions has proven they are more of a foe than a friend to us. In no way am I elated to see the animosity building. But equally important to say is that, the anger and frustration that has surfaced in Taiwanese people today is surely not something that begin this year. This momentum of hatred happens for good reasons. That even with the diverse beliefs in political views and parties in Taiwan, majority of Taiwanese can agree on one thing. Taiwan is not part of China. Taiwan should have its right to decide for our own future for the better or worse. More importantly, we should be able to do so without sacrifices made to the mainland. It is only then, that the standard for both sides can be critique fairly. It is then, both sides are treated equally and with respect.

To all the people that are coming on this board doubting on Eric's motive and loyalty, I would like to share my thoughts. For one, I do not know the man. I, much like many of you, come on this site after seeing his brave action on tv news. Thus, I have no intention to defend the guy for personal reason. Being in states for over 18 years now, I am not a ABC or ABT, but I can understand where the guy is coming from. Much like him, I have the same passion for my country and isn't afraid to announce it. For the guy that said he feels that it is cowardly for Eric to rush onto the stage in front of chairman Chang and contested boldly, THINK AGAIN. You really think by marching the protest outside is the only civil and politically correct way to express yourself? You think by acting calmly and more rationally will justify his opinion more? When was the last time in the history of this planet has a so called peaceful demonstration been effective? Why do you think people hold demonstrations and protests? Maybe because the people have given enough time and chances to see that if they don't take actions and matters in their own hands, that they may never get an opportunity to do so! You think thats too drastic? Or maybe if you just try to imagine how Taiwan will be like when it is taken over by the communist. Better yet, just look at Hong Kong! Be my guest and ask anyone living there on the changes they see before and after China have taken over. And needless to say, Hong Kong and Taiwan are NOT in the same situation. So then why should we obey or even consider to reunite with China? Explain to me someone HOW CAN YOU REUNITE WITH A COUNTRY THAT WAS NEVER PART OF US IN THE BEGINNING? And how funny it is to hear Mr Chang to openly say " If Taiwan don't pursue independence, there will be no war guaranteed? And to make matter worse, how about our own "president" Ma to say it alongside. This isn't an example of " was there chicken first or egg first". Clearly, the people of Taiwan know well that the logic of NO INDEPENDENT NO WAR makes absolute no sense. Furthermore, it only proves even more that China has once again positioned itself as a militant nation that simply believes in violence solves problem. How ironic is that? Mr Chang, Mr Ma, and the KMT all condemned the pushing incident as a form of violence, and yet they can not realize what triggers it. Certainly, two wrong does not make it right. But if they can dig the issue deeper, they may then come to a realization of the truth. Let there be one standard and this will be efforts made by all sides. Remember, TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU LIKE TO BE TREATED.

Who they're fooling? Three year old? Coming to Taiwan for education view exchange? Mr Chang is a joke, no joke! You really think by sayin that you're here just for that purpose will ease the tension and justify your trip here? Get out of here forreals! Tell me this anyone: WHO DO YOU KNOW SHAKE HANDS WITH SOMEONE THAT HAS POINTED A GUN TO YOUR HEAD?????? If you haven't, don't come on here and say why can't we be friends with them. For China to have missiles pointing right towards our side is just like being pointed at gunpoint. Don't give me that if this then no that. It is wrong to have the mentality to use force of any kind period. If you have problem with Taiwan seeking for independence, settle it like how you demanded the civilized way. And let's not even begin to talk about Lian Jan and Song Su Yu. Who in the right mind would go to the opposition side and shake hands no once but on several occasions throughout the recent years. Put it this way, NOT EVEN CHIANG KAI SHEK HAVE DONE IT BEFORE! One nation or not is beside the point here, but you just don't go over there and evidently surrenders to their side. it isn't just laughable but it also amazes the Chinese themselves. I say if we want respect from China and the rest of the world, let's straighten things out internally first. Having multiple voices only give reasons for China to say that the pro-independent party is just the minority.

Honestly speaking, I think Eric should forfeit his american citizenship if he really loves Taiwan that much. i do not support de jure independence because all of my family are still in Taiwan and they cannot leave the country if it is attacked by China. Eric can talk about independence all he wants, but I bet if China attacks taiwan, he will be on the next plane to LA.

Divisive politics in Taiwan is what is driving the economy down. Due to political instability and corruption, investors are pulling out of Taiwan. It is both the Blue and the Greens' fault that Taiwan is going down. There are more issues than the Taiwan/China issue, and perhaps we should focus on other things if the cross-strait conundrums cannot be solved.

Eric,

My Dad and I saw you on the FTV's news all the way from Brisbane, Australia through our satellite tv. I then embarked on a mission to find your blog (couldn't remember your website on the tv as it flashed by too quickly) to say - congratulations on publicizing your voice on the tellie! Keep up the great work!

We are proud supporters of anyone who sticks up for Taiwan and its independence.

I can't believe people are telling you to give up your American citizenship just to show that you "love" Taiwan more....

Do these people know that outside Taiwan, no other government accepts or acknowledges Taiwan as a "country" and therefore there is no issue about dual citizenship because technically, people like you and me don't have a "second" citizenship...

Anyone can be "Taiwanese" if they love Taiwan and stick up for its independence. Doesn't matter if their skin colour is white, yellow or black.

Take Dodgy Mr Ma for example. He's "Taiwanese" and has basically lived in Taiwan most of his life, but unfortunately, he still doesn't believe in Taiwan's sovereignty and wants to become China's lap-dog.

I just hope there are more of you out there supporting Taiwan as we're becoming an endangered species!

+oil lah~

Cheers,
IK :)

to longliveroc,
i see the value of your comment and do respect your opinion, because we are a democratic society which allows different point of view and opinions, ain’t it? However, in my opinion, just because your family members have forgiven the KMT, you cannot expect other victims of the 228 massacre to do the same as you, because every one is different and has different level of tolerance or forgiveness, whatever you want to call it, and even some people can just get over it easily, but what i was saying is that, what about the people that could not forgive and forget? Should we just disregard their feeling? In addition, the 228 massacre is a major serious event in modern and recent history of Taiwan, and as Taiwanese, it is our right to know the truth and our own history, but the KMT ruled ROC government would not even permit for a real investigation which would allow us to identify all facts and truth, and if realized, such an investigation could eventually teach our future generations of our past and be responsible for not repeating the same mistake as the KMT had made back in the late 1940. Granted, the KMT has “apologized” in a pseudo way, and only do so as any election approaches, but yet, not very sincerely at all when they do so, and if they did sincerely regret, they would have opened up an investigation to reveal the truth to the public, but they have declined and blocked the law and requests one too many times, so ask yourself, how could the rest of the victims carry on and move forward peacefully without “forgive and forget” to begin with?

My ancestors came from china nearly 400 years ago, but that does not mean I am more Taiwanese than any of the people in Taiwan, but I know for a fact that I am not Chinese because there are other ethnics mixed in my blood besides of Chinese Minnan. However, I do not deny “waishenren” as being Taiwanese at all; as long as they identify themselves as Taiwanese, recognize Taiwan as their motherland, just for the record, I despite the term “waisheren”, I am more agreed upon the term “new immigrants”, but if they do see themselves as Chinese citizen, keyword –citizen! then they aren’t Taiwanese at all. Being Taiwanese, that includes Chinese (Han, Minnan, Hakka), Formosan aborigines, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Pilipino, Caucasian, Dutch, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Black, Latin, American, etc., whatever your “bloodline” runs within and wherever your ancestor came from, and again, as long as you call yourself Taiwanese and recognize Taiwan as your motherland, then you are Taiwanese, and there’s no doubt about it. In my opinion, it comes down to self-identification, we call the people in the US as Americans because they are Americans, and we don’t identify American by their “bloodline” and neither do the Americans themselves, just as you can’t call a white person – Dutch, German, French, nor British…or call any African Americans as Senegalese or other specific African descent (although most of their ancestors came from west Africa). Again, self-identification is the key, an ex-coworker of mine who is a white descendant of South African, a 7th generation of European South African as he claimed, and he’d told me, ever since the blacks took over the government of South Africa, his family and him want to and have tried to return to Germany where his ancestors had came from. To me, that’s an example of self-identification crisis. Some of the White South Africans have been to Africa for generations, and formed a country through hardship, but still, some of them couldn’t identify themselves as Africans. Similarly, in Taiwan, if some “new immigrants” – which includes foreign brides and “waishenren” as you call, don’t identify themselves as Taiwanese nor recognize Taiwan as their homeland, then Taiwan would be in trouble definitely, especially, on its lacking of unity.

I do not doubt your love for Taiwan, and as a matter of fact, I appreciate your love for Taiwan, even if you are ABC, ABT, white, black, whatever, as long as you love Taiwan and stand for Taiwan’s democracy against every threat coming from China, then we shouldn’t doubt your love for our motherland. However, if ROC government and its legislation body do love Taiwan as much as you and I, then I urge the KMT to revise the outdated, Chinese version of constitution to only include its legal and sovereign territories as of Taiwan (Formosa), Penghu (Pescadores), Kingman and Matsu, because by stating every part of China as our territory within OUR constitution does not reflect the reality of the world today, but only shows how foolish and backward thinking the government is. Lastly, if dwelling on the 228 massacre incident happened in 1947 is not moving forward, then the KMT is even further behind us, because the KMT does not only dwell on its past “prime time” still by stating our neighboring country, PRC’s sovereign land, as part of our country, but also kid the KMT itself and its party members with an unrealistic lie.

Long Live Formosa and Its Democracy and Freedom!

A proud Formosan citizen

I am the man calling you all to "think harder". I was not considering to come back to leave anything. But when I saw "對於使用簡體字的人 應該最沒資格大談民主", I simply can't help. Let me ask you all another question:

If you have choice to make Taiwan be independent OR make whole China be democratic, which one you will vote?

THINK HARDER, THINK WIDER, AND THINK DEEPER. Or Taiwan will never be independent!

At 3:48 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

To the one message above me...

I am Taiwanese, born and raised in Taiwan, and Taiwan is my homeland, so my choice would be the independence of Taiwan without any doubt, and I don't even need to think harder or twice about it. The question was a no brainer to me, it's like asking us if we should care about the health system in Korea or the Phillipines...duh! they have nothing to do with us, and neither does the democray in China..I am not chinese, China is just a neighboring country, so we should i give a damn about democracy in China or not? However, being Asian, if China ever did become a democratic country, I wouldn't mind to see that happen at all, otherwise...democratic or not, I really do not give a shi8t about china, period.

Being polite to demonstrate Taiwan’s treasured Democracy depends on what kind of people you face; if it is China, then, this is certainly wrong to just be as quiet as clam at specific degree when realizing China deploys thousands of destructive missiles and weapon aimed at Taiwan meanwhile. If you don’t, even in your homeland, it will be likely and easily to be distortedly interpreted as a successful step for communist conspiracy toward annexation of Taiwan which could stir plenty of irrational patriots in China to cover up communist own commitment, toxic milk with melamine to kill infants, the riots everywhere on account of the corruption of communists etc.
However, KMT after it did its best to craftily deceive those idiots to win the legislator and president votes starts to betray mainstream and bully Taiwanese by colluding with China secretly. Thus, your guts pulling no political punches, instead of being a coward, which is an obvious difference between Taiwanese and Chink, get really appreciated!

LOVE TAIWAN !

It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.

Yes we can.

It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.

Yes we can.

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.

Yes we can.

It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.

Yes we can to justice and equality.

Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.

Yes we can heal this nation.

Yes we can repair this world.

Yes we can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics...they will only grow louder and more dissonant ........... We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea --

Yes. We. Can.

That is such a stupid question!

Taiwanese have suffered 60 years under that defunct ROC-Chinese KMT’s Marsh Law, a foreign power, 15% of minority (the Mainlander-Chinese) ruling the 85% of Taiwanese. The KMT regime persecuted ethnic Taiwanese, killing tens of thousands of them and imprisoning many Taiwanese leaders, professionals, scholars and activists between 1947 and 1987.

Over the past three weeks, seven DPP members have been questioned, arrested or detained by the KMT authorities, including former National Security Council secretary-general Chiou I-jen, DPP Chiayi County Commissioner Chen Ming-wen, former minister of the interior Yu
Cheng-hsien and city or county officials in Tainan and Yunlin. The Yulin county supervisor Mrs. Su tzy-fiun is on hunger strike in prison, protests that she is innocence.

"The political neutrality of the judicial system is an
essential element in a democracy. It is also essential that
any accused [is] considered innocent until proven guilty in
the court of law.

But the news media in Taiwan is controlled by the KMT, the judicial system is controlled by the KMT. Prosecutor’s office leaked to news media. "This kind of 'Trial by Press' is a violation
of the basic standards of judicial procedures in western countries. It also gives the distinct impression that the Kuomintang-KMT authorities are using the judicial system to get even with members of the former DPP government.

Because of the KMT’s conduct that painted Taiwan’s democracy backward.

The “WHITE TERROR” has returned under the KMT-Mr. Ma ying-joe now.

"Taiwanese have suffered 60 years under that defunct ROC-Chinese KMT’s Marsh Law,"

What kind of "suffering"? Let's see. Was it "suffering" that Taiwan used to be the strongest of 亞洲四小龍 in terms of economic development. Was it suffering that Taiwanese always have freedom moving freely anywhere they liked? Was it "suffering" that there are so many farmers and land owners (田僑仔) who got rich from selling their lands during the economic development? (BTW, 田僑仔 are mostly so-called "Taiwanese"). Was it suffering that Taiwanese even elected a "三級貧戶之子" as it President TWICE who made millions and millions of USD from bribery and public funds?

Stop making up stories about how bad it was under KMT rule. Why don't you move to Myanmar today and then come back to tell us what real suffering is like under tyranny.

"Over the past three weeks, seven DPP members have been questioned, arrested or detained by the KMT authorities, including former National Security Council secretary-general Chiou I-jen, DPP Chiayi County Commissioner Chen Ming-wen, former minister of the interior YuCheng-hsien and city or county officials in Tainan and Yunlin. The Yulin county supervisor Mrs. Su tzy-fiun is on hunger strike in prison, protests that she is innocence."

Chen Ming-Wen's and Su tzy-fiun's corruption cases had been under invesitigation for more than two years when DPP was still in power. Any politician who accept bribery should be prosecuted. Mrs. Su tzy-fiun could have made bail and get her day in court. Instead she declined bail and want to try her case in the media by pulling a 絕食 stunt.

Chiou I-jen should be hung if it's proven that he embezzled Taiwan's secret diplomacy fund for his personal use, especially knowing how hard it has been for Taiwan's check book diplomacy- 發國難財的人是最另人不齒的!!!

"Do you know how prosperous Taiwan was before WWII and after 1920?"

"Do you know how many elite had been killed during the pass sixty years?" How many? why don't you just pull a nubmer out of your hat. DPP has made up so many numbers that any number sounds good to me.

You Sound like someone whose family missed being ruled by the Japs. Do you know how many Taiwanese men (軍伕) were forced to fight in the Japanese army against their will and never returned? Of course you don't care and will not remember to mention and is all for glorifying the Japs. Your family is probably one of those "elites" who gladly served the Japs to suppressed Taiwanese.

Do you know how many Taiwanese women were forced to serve as army prostitutes (aka Comfort Women 慰安婦) against their will during WWII? Of course you don't care and will not remember to mention and is all for glorifying the Japs. Your family is probably one of those "elites" who gladly served the Japs to suppressed Taiwanese.

The Japs never apologized to the Taiwanese 軍伕's family for the lost lives and the forced prostitutes. However, people like you happily forgive the Japs and never said a word about the Taiwanese 軍伕 killed.

If you are so willing to forgive the Japs for their war crimes during WWII, why do you keep overlooking the contribution that KMT made in Taiwan? What about the economic development 70's, 80's and 90's? How about KMT's education policy that allowed a "三級貧戶之子" to get the first rate education and became Taiwan's President TWICE? Without KMT, Taiwan is already part of China. Do you think that America would have supported Taiwan without KMT in Taiwan?

Not all Taiwanese "appreciated" the Japs as much as you do. If you have the capacity to forgive the Japs for what they did to Taiwanese, you should have some decency to look beyond the 228 tragedy- the one incident that kept being used by DDP even though 228 was more about KMT against communists. 228 was not a TI movement.
